WERTHER GERMONDARI was born in Rimini in 1963. From 1984 to 1986 he attended the Screenwriting Workshop under Tonino Guerra in the Republic of San Marino. In 1988 Germondari won a scholarship to attend the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia of Rome and obtained a degree there in Cinematography under Giuseppe Rotunno. He then graduated in Institutions of Directing from the University of Bologna. Interested in innovative experimental dynamics that are neo-conceptual and situational, characterized by a taste for the ironic and surreal, Germondari has experimented for 25 years through many different expressive media (from painting to installations, photography to film, videos to live performance). He has been invited to participate in many important international group shows. Germondari's works have also been shown in one-man shows where he focuses on hidden elements highlighted in styles sometimes in a goliard spirit. Specifically in the format of the short, Germondari has made more than fifty films. These have been screened at hundreds of festivals, including Cannes (in 1994, "Una strada diritta lunga", co-directed with Maria Laura Spagnoli) and Venice. Many of Germondari's shorts have won awards and have been distributed in European theatres and sold to international television networks. Among the many retrospectives that have been dedicated to his work are notably "Hommage à Werther Germondari" in 2001 at the Cinémathèque de Nice (France); at the Siena Short Film Festival in 2003, at the Amsterdam's Ostade Teather in 2005 and at the Oldenburg FF in 2006. MARIA LAURA SPAGNOLI was born in Amelia (Italy), in 1960. In 1987, she got her degree in Music History at the University of Rome and in Institutions of Directing from the University of Bologna. Between 1982 and 1989, she took part in the setting of a few operas, helping also as a director assistant. In 1988, after writing and staging a short play for the theatre, she started to co-operate with Werther Germondari. In 1990, in Rome, she attended a direction stage with director Nanni Loy, and she was admitted to the Rossini Opera Academy in Pesaro. Si laurea poi in Istituzioni di Regia all'Università di Bologna con una tesi sulle ‘Tragedie in due battute’ di Achille Campanile. Attento a dinamiche innovative sperimentali neo concettuali e situazioniste, che si caratterizzano di un gusto ironico e surreale, svolge da 25 anni una ricerca che si attua attraverso numerosi media espressivi (dalla pittura all’installazione, dalla fotografia al film, dal video alla performance), partecipando a numerose collettive internazionali e realizzando molte mostre personali. Nell’ambito specifico del cortometraggio ha realizzato circa cinquanta opere (il primo lavoro, in super8, è del 1985), che sono state proiettate a centinaia di festival (compresi Cannes e Venezia), e distribuite nei cinema europei e in molte televisioni internazionali. In esse esprime uno stile di regia che spesso si concentra su elementi tradizionalmente di secondo piano. Usa il bianco e nero e il colore, l’animazione, e predilige durate molto brevi per i suoi corti, a cui spesso manca la trovata finale, creando uno stato di sospensione surreale. Spesso gira piccoli lavori ‘muti’, in cui il rumore delle cose prende il posto del dialogo tra gli esseri umani. Alcuni dei suoi esperimenti dimostrano il superamento del confine tra arte e cinema, altri la sua attitudine ludica alla provocazione (La7). MARIA LAURA SPAGNOLI Nata ad Amelia nel 1960. Laureata in Lettere (Storia della Musica), negli anni ‘80 lavora in teatro, collaborando alla messinscena di alcune opere liriche come assistente alla regia. Nel 1988 scrive in collaborazione e vede rappresentata a Bologna la pièce ‘Sibilorebus’, con cui inizia il sodalizio con Werther Germondari. Nel marzo 1990 partecipa ad uno stage di Regia, tenuto a Roma da Nanni Loy e nello stesso anno frequenta l’Accademia Rossiniana di Pesaro. Ha realizzato, come regista, vari cortometraggi tra cui, nel 1994, il pluripremiato UNA STRADA DIRITTA LUNGA (selezione ufficiale in competizione Cannes IFF 1994), FOUR CORNERS (2003), PER VERSUM (2005),  BEEP!
