Exhibition: THAT BEAUTIFUL QUEER MESS
Artists: Steven Fraser, Werther Germondari, Jasmin Hagendorfer, Riya Kulkarni, Kyrahm + Julius Kaiser, Nicky Miller, Dan Nieders (+ Lisa Skory and Alex Hook), Olga Volodina, Wild Cat.
Playing irreverently with the title of the famous book by Carlo Emilio Gadda ‘Quer pasticciaccio brutto di via Merulana’ (translated into English in 'That awful mess on Via Merulana'), the Ospizio Giovani Artisti exhibits another exhibition on the universe of orientations and gender identities that do not identify with 'traditional' sexual labels.
Giocando irrispettosamente con il titolo del famoso romanzo di Carlo Emilio Gadda, l’Ospizio Giovani Artisti espone un’altra mostra sull’universo degli orientamenti e delle identità di genere non identificabili nelle etichette sessuali ‘tradizionali’.
Steven Fraser (Edinburgh, GB, 1981) is an animator, writer and theatre-maker who creates short films and performances that are designed for adults who express neurodiverse behaviours, but can be enjoyed by anyone. I make inventive use of animation, puppetry and kinetic art to present unique and distinctive art. I identify as queer and take a queer perspective within my work. Steven is autistic, live with Asperger’s syndrome and is particularly interested in the intersectionality of autism and queerness.
Werther Germondari (Rimini, Italy, 1963) Visual artist, performer and filmmaker. Interested in innovative experimental dynamics that are neo-conceptual and situational, characterized by a taste for the ironic and surreal, Germondari has experimented for 35 years through many different expressive media (from painting to installations, photography to film, videos to live performance). Germondari's works have also been shown in solo exhibitions where he focuses on hidden elements highlighted in styles. In 2013 he founded the Ospizio Giovani Artisti.
Jasmin Hagendorfer is a Vienna-based artist, writer, curator, and producer. Her main artistic focus lies on installation, performance and film. She is concerned with political discourses and questions about gender identity, specifically with an emphasis on queer and post-porn politics. As the Creative Director of the Porn Film Festival Vienna and transition international queer & minorities film festival, she creates the concepts of the events, specifically balancing the artistic and theoretical content.
Riya Kulkarni (New Delhi, India, 1993) is born and brought up in a predominantly matriarchal family in the urban pockets of New Delhi. Her education in film at Bangalore’s Srishti Institute of Art, Design and Technology encouraged her to pick subjects close to her that reflected her value system and summoned her memories of home and hometown. She has always questioned gender politics in the cultural framework of modern society and her works, at subliminal level have tried to engage audience into questioning their own ways of thinking and being in a society.
Kyrahm + Julius Kaiser is an Italian artist couple based in Rome, with individual expertise in the fields of visual and performance art, video art, film and LGTB activism. Upon their encounter, they started the project Human Installations, a research comprising contemporary art, live art and avant-garde theatre. In a constant dialogue with cinema, they create works of video art, documentaries and films. Their interest lies on the social function of the artist, existential dynamics, the role of identity, and the experimentation along mental and physical limits and gender roles.
Nicky Miller (Paris, France, 1974) is a Berlin based genderqueer interdisciplinary artist, Specialising in film, performance art and creative writing. Originally born in Paris, France and of vietnamese origins, Nicky has also lived and worked extensively in New York City, and Brussels. LGTBQ+ sexualities and identities are at the core of Nicky’s work. Never afraid of tacking politically sensitive topics or hard issues such as sex-work, fetishism, BDSM and queer sex practices. Challenging normative structures conventional thinking, Nicky’s work is redefining society’s perception of queer identities.
Dan Nieders (?????, Svizzera, 1995) As a small-town country child from Switzerland, Dan Nieders used to escape through writing and storytelling. In 2015, Dan moved to New York where he discovered photography and continued to write. In 2022 Dan Nieders settled on the shores of Lake Geneva where he wrote and directed his first short film "Monochrome". A drama/erotic film about the questioning of identity. His way of bringing together two things that are special to him: words and images.
Olga Volodina is an artist, photographer, performance artist, activist, author of many social and art projects that have been presented at exhibitions in Asia and Europe. Olga was born in Uzbekistan. At the age of 5, her parents moved her to Russia, where she studied at the Faculty of Journalism. Due to the unpleasant political situation in Russia, in 2007-8 she moved to Thailand, where she lived and worked for more than 10 years. Olga currently lives in Bulgaria. Her projects are always very personal and sincere and intend to evoke an emotional connection within the viewer.
Wild Cat (??????, Italy, 1986) is a queer and trans activist that live in Berlin. For several years now, Wild Cat has been using her body for political activism, for example: through impromptu actions at queer and feminist demonstrations, where she writes political messages inherent to transfeminist and queer struggles on her half- naked body. Wild Cat and Werther Germondari made several short films (many still unreleased), where they tried to tackle these issues with the lightness of comedy.

Steven Fraser (Edinburgh, GB, 1981) è un animatore, scrittore e regista teatrale che crea cortometraggi e spettacoli pensati per adulti che esprimono comportamenti neurodiversi, ma che possono comunque essere graditi. Fa un uso creativo dell'animazione e della kinetic art. Si identifica come queer ed utilizza una prospettiva queer anche nel suo lavoro. Steven è autistico, vive con la sindrome di Asperger ed è particolarmente interessato all'intersezionalità tra queer e autismo.
Werther Germondari (Rimini, 1963) Artista visivo, performer e filmmaker. Attento a dinamiche innovative sperimentali neo-concettuali che si caratterizzano per un gusto ironico e surreale, svolge dai primi anni ottanta una ricerca attraverso numerosi media espressivi. Ha partecipato a esposizioni in gallerie private e spazi sperimentali internazionali, alternando installazioni d’ambiente, videowork e atti performativi, focalizzando l’attenzione su elementi nascosti, attinenti a una visione reale, sociale e politica. Nel 2013 ha ideato l’Ospizio Giovani Artisti.
Jasmin Hagendorfer (?????, Austria, ????) è un'artista, scrittrice, curatrice e produttrice di Vienna. La sua attività artistica si concentra principalmente su installazioni, performance e film. Si occupa di discorsi politici e di questioni relative all'identità di genere, con particolare attenzione alla politica queer e post-porno. Tiene workshop e conferenze sulla pornografia femminista e sul cinema/arte. In qualità di direttore creativo della Porn FF Vienna e della transition int. queer & minorities FF, crea i concetti degli eventi, bilanciando in particolare il contenuto artistico e teorico.
Riya Kulkarni (Nuova Delhi, India, 1993) è nata e cresciuta in una famiglia prevalentemente matriarcale. La sua formazione cinematografica presso lo Srishti Institute of Art, Design and Technology di Bangalore l'ha incoraggiata a scegliere argomenti a lei vicini che riflettessero il suo sistema di valori e evocassero i suoi ricordi di casa e città natale. Attraverso il suo lavoro cerca di riflettere sui suoi legami di appartenenza a una famiglia incentrata sulla donna, sul quartiere come entità e sul dramma situazionale che si svolge tra i personaggi delle storie.
Kyrahm + Julius Kaiser sono una coppia di artisti italiani che vive a Roma, con esperienza individuale nei campi dell'arte visiva e performativa, della video arte, del cinema e dell'attivismo LGTB. Dal loro incontro è nato il progetto Human Installations, una ricerca che comprende arte contemporanea, live art e teatro d'avanguardia. In un dialogo costante con il cinema, realizzano opere di videoarte, documentari e film. Il loro interesse risiede nella funzione sociale dell'artista, nel ruolo dell'identità e nella sperimentazione lungo i limiti mentali e fisici e i ruoli di genere.
Nicky Miller (Parigi, Francia, 1974) è un'artista interdisciplinare genderqueer con sede a Berlino, specializzata in film, performance art e scrittura creativa. Nata a Parigi, in Francia, e di origini vietnamite, Nicky ha vissuto e lavorato a lungo anche a New York e a Bruxelles. Le sessualità e le identità LGTBQ+ sono al centro del lavoro di Nicky. Non ha mai paura di affrontare temi politicamente sensibili o questioni spinose come il sex-work, il feticismo, il BDSM e le pratiche sessuali queer.
Dan Nieders (?????, Svizzera, 1995) Da bambino di campagna in una piccola cittadina svizzera, Dan Nieders si rifugiava nella scrittura e nella narrazione. Nel 2015 si è trasferito a New York dove ha scoperto la fotografia e ha continuato a scrivere. Nel 2022 Dan Nieders si è stabilito sulle rive del Lago di Ginevra dove ha scritto e diretto il suo primo cortometraggio, “Monochrome”, visibile in mostra. Un film drammatico/erotico sulla messa in discussione dell’identità.
Olga Volodina è un'artista, fotografa, performance artist, attivista, autrice di numerosi progetti sociali e artistici che sono stati presentati in mostre in Asia ed Europa. Olga è nata in Uzbekistan. All'età di 5 anni, i suoi genitori la trasferirono in Russia, dove studiò alla Facoltà di Giornalismo. A causa della spiacevole situazione politica in Russia, nel 2007-2008 si è trasferita in Tailandia, dove ha vissuto e lavorato per più di 10 anni. Olga attualmente vive in Bulgaria. I suoi progetti fotografici sono sempre molto personali e sinceri e intendono evocare una connessione emotiva nello spettatore.
Wild Cat (??????, Italia, 1986) è un'attivista queer e trans che vive a Berlino. Da diversi anni usa il suo corpo per l'attivismo politico, ad esempio attraverso azioni improvvisate in occasione di manifestazioni queer e femministe, dove scrive sul suo corpo seminudo e a seno nudo messaggi politici inerenti alle lotte transfemministe e queer. Wild Cat e Werther Germondari hanno realizzato insieme diversi cortometraggi, molti ancora inediti, cercando di affrontare questi temi con la leggerezza della commedia.
